How do you know that you are not in the right place?
I heard people saying that when you know you are the most
learned man in the group, you are not in the right place. Now, what do we mean
by ‘the right place’ here? A place where we feel good? Or a place that makes us
comfortable?
Even though the two terms can be taken interchangeably,
assuming we are comfortable when we feel good, still they are quite different.
When we are comfortable, we know that we are in that zone which doesn’t affect
us much. It’s like being part of a place where things happen easily, without
much effort. It’s a place where you need not give your 100% to achieve a 100%
result. That’s what makes us comfortable. Now, which is the place that’ll make
us feel good? A place where we do good? Or a place where we are recognized for
what we do. It can also be a place that brings out the best in us. It can be a
place that will make us achieve our personal as well as our professional goals.
There can be many other reasons why we may feel good at a place.
Now, what if none of these are actually happening and
still you decide to stick a place? That’s what we call a habit. We get so
habituated of being in a place that we dread the fact of taking a step ahead.
We are so afraid of going two steps back that we end up not taking that one
step at all. I see professionals sitting in the same position for years without
taking a little risk of trying to move ahead.
“Who knows? The next place might be even worse!”
“I am fine here, I don’t need more”
“Let’s not take the risk. Better be here with the
familiar ones”
“Known Devil is better than unknown Devils”
These phrases are so familiar in the corporate world that
I feel really bad looking at people gradually sitting in the same chair for
years and doing the same job over and over again.
What I strongly believe, after working for a corporate
word for 10 years is that one should not be scared of taking risks in life. We
should instead explore more and more with our talents and find new
opportunities to delve into. We should not let the shadow of diffidence overcast
our dreams. I understand, being a working professional, there are
responsibilities to take care of, but that should not make us redundant. We
should not be afraid of walking into new avenues, accepting the fact that there
may be mistakes in our way. We should believe that no matter how difficult it
gets, we always have the capability of handling it and making our way out. One
bad decision will not reverse our destiny in any way, it will, in fact, make us
strong and proficient in handling ourselves. In fact, lack of decision making
may sometimes lead to fatal results.
If you have a split second, I would love to have your
comment on this. I will be very happy to know how you feel about it.
I would close it with a few words from my favorite
author, which explains this as its best.
“If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is
lethal.” – Paulo Coelho
